European Parliament building

After years of debate and negotiation, the European Union's AI Act is now enforceable. Starting today, companies operating in the EU must comply with a tiered system of requirements based on the risk level of their AI applications.

What changes

High-risk AI systems used in healthcare, law enforcement, and employment now require conformity assessments, technical documentation, and human oversight mechanisms. General-purpose AI models must disclose training data summaries and energy consumption.

Global impact

Like GDPR before it, the AI Act is expected to set a global standard. Companies that build for EU compliance will likely apply the same standards worldwide rather than maintaining separate systems.
